Susan Tsvangirai was travelling with her husband south of the capital Harare when the accident occurred, according to sources within Mr Tsvangirai's party, the Movement for Democratic Change. The crash immediately raised fears that Mr Tsvangirai had been the target of an assassination attempt. Mr Tsvangirai and his wife had been travelling to a weekend rally in his home region of Buhera, south of Harare, when their vehicle collided with a haulage lorry near the town of Beatrice. The crash comes just three weeks after 56-year-old Mr Tsvangirai was sworn in as prime minister in a government power-sharing deal with president Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.
