Negotiating a bicycle along a high wire, Pinky, the Moluccan Cockatoo has been entertaining the crowds at Miami's Jungle Island for 67 years. A picture taken in 1946 shows Pinky perched on the forearm of the former prime minister as he sits in a wicker chair. After leading battle scarred Britain through the Second World War, and losing the 1945 General Election to Clement Attlee, Churchill was ordered to escape the English winter by his doctor. Finding solace in Miami, Churchill spent New Year's Day 1946 in sunny Florida where he stayed for eight months. During his time in the state, Churchill visited the aviary sanctuary, which at that time was known as the Parrot Jungle facility, and had opened in 1936. Pinky was born in 1941 so she was fully grown and performing by the time Churchill visited the park. |
